COMMENTARY | One thing seems abundantly clear heading into the presidential election: The Republicans are having some minor issues. As CNN reports, Rick Santorum completed a three-state sweep that pretty much puts the leader, Mitt Romney, in an interesting position. Romney is pretty much left with some ground to make up, and yet one has to wonder if any of the Republican potential nominees could win an election against President Barack Obama.
The problem is The Ticket reports Santorum snuck by Romney in Colorado for a 5 percent victory margin, he beat him by 30 percentage points in Missouri. Plus, Romney was a distant third to Santorum in Minnesota with Ron Paul taking second place. Raising money is going to be difficult without a clear front-runner because it divides the party well into the year.
On the other side, the Democrats know exactly who they are going to be putting money and political muscle behind come November. An Associated Press report indicates President Obama believes he deserves a second term, and if the economy keeps improving, it is going to be hard to get voters to disagree. The ups and downs of the Republican hopefuls are just making President Obama's campaign that much easier.
Is President Obama unbeatable in November? No, but the early results are encouraging for any number of Republican potentials. Santorum, Romney and even Paul have made some impressive headway; however, the going is going to a lot tougher as the process drags on.
The winner of the Republican nomination will likely be the candidate who manages to survive the campaign and election process with as much class as possible. Still, the ups and downs might not be good for any single candidate, because it gets all of them into the press. However, come November only one will truly matter, and the big question is: Who is it going to be?
