Colombia rebels say freeing all 'prisoners of war'

Colombia's main rebel group said Sunday it is freeing the last of the government captives it has held for years, and will abandon the practice of kidnapping.

The leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia said on its website that it will free 10 "prisoners of war" and says they are the last in their control.

The government says the rebel group holds at least 12.

A liberation could help advance toward negotiations to end the long civil conflict since the government says the group known as the FARC must free all the hostages it holds before talks can start. However the FARC did not say it was abandoning hostilities.

The rebels announced on Dec. 27 that they would free six of the captives, but said a month later that they were delaying the release because of a government "militarization" of the area where it said release was planned. It did not specify the location or set a date.

That announcement, also on the rebel website, prompted President Juan Manuel Santos to issue a tweet: "My God, no more tricks and deception. We don't even know where the hostages are. They haven't provided the coordinates. Free them now!"

Latin America's last major rebel movement, the FARC was founded in 1964. It has been releasing captives piecemeal since early 2008. The new statement assured that the group will give up the practice of kidnapping.

From Negro Creek to Wop Draw, place names offend

Just east of Victorville in California's Mojave Desert two bluffs rise 3,000-feet from the valley floor. A 1949 map by the U.S. Geological Survey officially gave them the name locals had called them for as long as anyone could remember: Pickaninny Buttes.

The name, a pejorative term that represents a caricature of black children, was likely bestowed because African Americans attempted a settlement near the Lucerne Valley at the turn of the last century. Whatever the reason, it stuck ? and still has the propensity to shock.

"Good grief," moaned Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP, when told about the site. "That is just about as offensive as it gets because nowhere in the English language was that used other than to be a slur at little girls."

Pickaninny Buttes is one of thousands of places across the United States still saddled with names that are an insight into our divisive past, when demeaning names given to areas settled by ethnic or racial minorities were recorded on official government maps and often stuck. Some, like Wop Draw in Wyoming; Jewtown, Ga.; Beaner Lake, Wash.; Wetback Tank reservoir in New Mexico and Polack Lake in Michigan, can sound rudely impolitic to the ears of a more inclusive society.

Others, such as the former Olympic ski resort of Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe have become so ingrained in the vernacular that they're spoken without a second thought. And yet, nine states are on a mission to scrub "squaw" from their maps, a slang word first given to Native women that came to mean both a part of the female genitalia and a woman of ill repute. California is not among those states, to the continuing frustration of many regional Indian tribes.

"It's so disrespectful I'm not even going to say the name," said Chairman James Ramos of the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians in Southern California. "Every time I hear that I think of our women elders and my daughters and my wife, and I'm not going to degrade them that way by repeating the name. It's deplorable to all native people across the United States."

Ramos was incredulous to learn that a conical mountain peak in his tribal area along Interstate 15 between Barstow and Las Vegas is named "Squaw Tit," one of more than a thousand places across the U.S. with the S-word in it and eight places with the exact name.

"It just seems like dominant society is not culturally sensitive to and doesn't take seriously Native American thought and feelings," said Corine Fairbanks of the American Indian Movement.

In Arizona, tensions flared over a craggy mountain in Phoenix that was historically named Squaw Peak. A former governor made it her personal crusade to have it renamed for the first American Indian woman killed in combat in Iraq for the U.S. military. It was changed to Piestewa Peak in 2008.

Some state legislatures take it upon themselves to change names deemed offensive. In 1995 Minnesota was first to pass legislation outlawing "squaw," a process that took five years to complete. Oregon once had 172 places with the name squaw, the most in the U.S., and since 2001 has been engulfed in the tedious process of determining historically accurate new names. Oklahoma has passed a nonbinding resolution encouraging the change. Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee also are making state-mandated changes. In September 2011 the last six offensive place names in Maine were changed. Still, there are 297 Savages nationwide and 11 Redskins.

The issue of offensive place names that have stuck despite changing times arises occasionally, as it did when the media reported the name of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's hunting camp: "Niggerhead," and when the N-word was found on headstones at a cemetery near Sacramento where graves were relocated in 1954 to make way for a dam.

Last fall in the California Gold Rush town of Rough and Ready, local resident Gail Smith bought property along a babbling creek. When she looked up the county assessors' map she was mortified to learn its name was still listed as something ordered eliminated from all federal place maps almost five decades ago: "Nigger Creek."

"It is like an obscenity," wrote Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall in 1963, when he ordered that the N-word be scrubbed from all federal place maps. Three years later he added "Jap," which was a pejorative form of Japanese. They are the only two names officially outlawed by the federal government. In the days before federal databases, all maps had to be changed by hand. So it was up to federal mapping offices to find and change the local features and some were missed.

The lingering names show how difficult it is to find and change obscure places, to scrub the landscape clean of offensive names. There are more than 2.2 million geographic features recorded in the national database. Many are not widely known, and other times there is local resistance to change.

"We've had a few over the years that have popped up," said Jennifer Runyon, senior researcher for the U.S. Board of Geographic Names. "You get the old timers who never wanted to change it and still call it that. But even 'Negro' today has taken on a different meaning."

When Nevada County officials learned about the N-word Creek, they changed it to Negro Creek. The new name did not appease Smith, who wrote to the Geographic Names board asking to make it something that didn't evoke images of racism. When she learned it was named for the men who panned for gold there, she suggested Black Miners Creek. The all-white Board of Supervisors recommended Dec. 6 that it not be changed, that they did "not view the word 'Negro' as a pejorative."

Said the NAACP's Jenkins, "When you stoop so low to have that name and in 2011 you have the audacity not to want to change it with some reason that defies logic, well it's even more offensive,"

From Alaska to Florida and Maine to California there are 757 places with Negro in the name, according to an analysis of government records. Many of those place names were not spelled that way originally. There are also 20 places with "Dago" (and many more that have been changed to "Italian"), 1,100 Squaws, six "Polacks," 10 Cripples, 58 named Gypsy, 30 "Chinamans," eight "Injuns," 1 "Hebe Canyon," 35 "Spooks," 14 "Sambos" ? including Black Sambo Mine in California ? 30 "Spades," and too many "Coons" to count. There are also at least seven "Darkeys," another offensive name for black people.

Darkey Springs, Tenn., was Dark Springs until 1820, when a slave trader began holding auctions at the site, said Betty Tindell Johnson, a seventh-generation resident of the township.

"It's just a part of history that you wish hadn't happened," said Johnson, 71. "But there's a lot of stuff right now you wish wasn't happening."

Jewtown, Ga. was settled by former plantation slaves from St. Simons Island. It originally was called Levisonton after Robert and Sig Levison, who owned a store there in 1880.

A gentle knoll in eastern New Mexico formerly named "Nigger Hill" was renamed for those Buffalo Soldiers who fought in the Army's American Indian wars in the 1870s. During a campaign against the Comanches in July 1877, four members of a 10th U.S. Calvary company died on the hill in Roosevelt County.

A black personnel director at Eastern New Mexico University heard about the name and campaigned to have it changed to Buffalo Soldier Hill in 2005. But just across the state line in west Texas, a creek likely named for the same event still holds the name "Dead Negro Draw."

The Board on U.S. Geographic Names is a department of the U.S. Geologic Survey, whose mapmakers charted the country in intricate detail on a project only recently completed.

Historians say it's important to understand the historical context of the names before passing judgment on them, including the 36 Chinamans and two Chinks. The Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco is filled with old paperwork and receipts made out to "Chinaman" because it was easier for some pioneer shopkeepers to write that than to figure out the man's name, said executive director Sue Lee.

"Are these places offensive on their face? I'd hesitate to say because it's all in the intent," she said. "It's not that simple because they may have started out not offensive. It's site by site."

Even with the federal and several state governments leading the way, scrubbing offensive place names ? except for the N-word and Jap ? hasn't been easy.

There's certainly been no rush to change the name of California's Pickaninny Buttes, for example, though the San Manuel tribe is petitioning to change Squaw Tit, now that they know it exists.

The mere existence of offensive place names can be a teaching moment. Christopher Jimenez y West, a specialist in African American history at Pasadena City College, says there is an important distinction between purging offensive names from the landscape and erasing them from history.

"Of course they should be purged. The intention was to disempower and to marginalize. But should it be erased from our historic memory? I don't think so. For me, at least, they are an insight into the way we once thought about and considered others."

Hauppauge Broadway review

New ways to watch TV, we're always looking for 'em. New products for you to buy, companies are always trying to make 'em. The two aspirations converge with Hauppauge's latest product, Broadway. The idea here isn't exactly novel, but with few exceptions Sling Media has been left to dominate the placeshifting category. The Broadway picks up where Sling kicked off, adding WiFi and more interestingly, shedding the need for costly clients, instead using a built-in web server to access the live video streams. Interesting idea, sure, but is it actually useful and worth the $199 it demands? We hope to reveal just that, after you click through of course.

Low Back Pain Issues | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Perhaps you have been suffering from chronic back pains for quite a while; you need not worry too much. A large number of people the world over suffer from this ailment throughout the year and seek all sorts of treatments.

Low back pain is broadly categorized by medical professionals, as acute or chronic, based on how long it lasts for. Acute low back pain is that which occurs for a relatively short period of time, while chronic low back pain could go on for weeks.

The symptoms and types of back pain often vary, while its severity ranges from mild discomfort to debilitating pain, where the person concerned is sometimes even unable to stand and walk.

The cause of low back pain is hard to pinpoint, as it can be the result of several factors. Sudden harm such as a car accident, heavy manual labor or a sports injury are some of thecontributing causes of acute back pain, while obesity, poor sleeping position or inappropriate posture can also sometimes result in chronic back pain.Low back pain could also be the result of other serious medical conditions. Arthritis, tumors, a pinched nerve, ruptured discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, spinal degeneration, osteoporosis, spondylitis, fibromyalgia and skeletal irregularities, all cause back pain and need proper medical attention.

Low back pain occurs more often in the old and in people who are between the ages of 30-50 because with age bone strength, muscle elasticity and tone tend to diminish. However, youngsters too are not exempt from back pain, and here, its primary causes are said to be a inactive life style, too much physical exercise and carrying heavy backpacks/satchels to school.

With the advance in medical science, a assortment of diagnostic tools are available to discover the cause of low back pain. X rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds, discography and a variety of electro-diagnostic procedures are now put to use by physicians, in order to find the proper cause of the back pain.

Depending on the contributing factor, numerous treatment choices can now be explored; be it in the form of medication, rest, a change in lifestyle or even surgery. So, if you do experience low back pain, do not suffer in silence; it is always wise to seek medical advice from the inception, to reduce the chances of it becoming worse.

Thousands of Afghans protest Quran burning

Thousands of Afghans rallied outside a U.S. military base over a report that foreign troops had improperly disposed of copies of the Quran, including some being burned. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By msnbc.com and news services

Updated at 10:35 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan?-- Afghan demonstrators used slingshots and?fired guns in the air?while U.S. helicopters responded?with flares, after thousands of?angry people?gathered Tuesday to protest the alleged burning of copies of the Quran at the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan.?

The demonstrators ? shouting "Die, die, foreigners!" ? started gathering outside Bagram airbase, an hour's drive north of the capital Kabul, in the morning after learning of the incident.?

The top NATO general in Afghanistan, General John Allen, ordered an investigation, offered "sincere apologies"? and said any improper handling of the Quran was "NOT intentional" in a written statement.

A military official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press?Tuesday the Muslim holy books had been removed from a library at a nearby detention center because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions. He said it appeared the Qurans and other Islamic readings were being used to fuel extremism,?with detainees apparently were leaving notes for one another inside them.

The official, who did not want his nationality disclosed, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident.

Afghan protesters throw stones toward U.S. soldiers standing at the gate of Bagram airbase during a protest Tuesday.

Photographs taken by the AFP news agency outside the airbase, showed people firing slingshots and others holding charred copies of the Quran, Islam's holy book.

"There are about 2,000 to 3,000 demonstrators, throwing stones at the base and chanting down with the foreigners," Rahman Sayedkhili, a senior police officer in Parwan province, where Bagram is located, said.

'Very angry'
A Reuters reporter at one of Bagram's gates said flares were fired from U.S. helicopters in a bid to disperse the crowd.

A demonstrator holds a copy of the Quran allegedly set alight at Bagram airbase.

"The people are very angry. The mood is very negative," Zia Ul Rahman, deputy provincial police chief, said. "Some are firing hunting guns in the air, but there have been no casualties."

Police said a similar protest on Tuesday just east of Kabul ended peacefully.

Roshna Khalid, the provincial governor's spokeswoman, said?Qurans?were burned inside Bagram, citing accounts from local laborers.

"The laborers normally take the garbage outside and they found the remains of Qurans," she said.

Latest killer of Afghan children: Hunger

Ahmad Zaki Zahed, chief of the provincial council, said U.S. military officials gave him about 30 Qurans and other religious books that were recovered before they were destroyed.

"Some are burned. Some are not burned," Zahed said, adding that the books were used by detainees once incarcerated at the base.

The materials were in trash that two soldiers with the U.S.-led coalition transported in a truck late Monday night to a pit where garbage is burned on the base, according to Zahed, who spoke with five Afghans working at the pit.

He said that when the workers noticed the religious books in the trash, they stopped the disposal process.

Public relations disaster?
Allen attempted to contain fury over the incident, which could be a public relations disaster for the U.S. military as it tries to pacify the country ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

Afghan refugees wait for relief from the cold weather

"When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities," said General John Allen, head of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), in a written statement, as well as in a video released on a U.S. military website.

"This was NOT intentional in any way," his written statement said.

Bagram also houses a prison for Afghans detained by American forces. The center has caused resentment among Afghans because of reports of torture and ill-treatment of suspected Taliban prisoners, with President Hamid Karzai demanding the transfer of prisoners to Afghan security.

NYT: Afghan girls pay price for elders' misdeeds

Allen did not provide details on the incident.

Winning the hearts and minds of Afghans is critical to U.S. efforts to defeating the Taliban, but critics say Western forces often fail to grasp Afghanistan's religious and cultural sensitivities.

"I offer my sincere apologies for any offence this may have caused, to the president of Afghanistan, the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and most importantly, to the noble people of Afghanistan," Allen added.

Protests raged for three days across Afghanistan in April last year after a U.S. pastor burned a Quran in Florida. Eleven people were killed when demonstrators stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, including seven foreign U.N. workers. Another riot in the southern city of Kandahar left nine dead and more than 80 wounded.

Twitter adds Small Business Advertising | Primatir ? The Pinnacle of ...

On Thursday of last week, Reuters reported that Twitter launched a service to allow small businesses to buy and place ads on the service.? Since 2010, Twitter has sold ?promoted tweets? to large businesses on a case by case basis.? The new service will be open to small businesses who use American Express, and will be limited to the first 10,000 small businesses that sign up. Go to the sign-up page here.

I have noticed the change as early as yesterday in my Twitter feed.? In the past, promoted tweets were few and far between, and were clearly marked as promoted tweets. They would stay at the top of the twitter feed as you updated it, even as they aged. ?I noticed in my twitter feed yesterday tweets from small businesses that stayed at the top of my twitter feed as I refreshed, even though the tweet was 3 hours old. They were not clearly marked as promoted tweets, but they obviously were, since they stayed in the top position.? I?m not sure how this is going to go over with twitter users. Twitter says the response has been mostly positive.? By limiting initial use of the system to businesses that use or accept American Express, they may be able to eliminate scams, spammers, and other problems that plague Google and Facebook.

It does present an opportunity for small businesses hoping to promote their online presence through social media. Advertisers are able to pick cities or regions where they want their ads to appear. ?The dashboard allows you to choose from 210 markets in the US, so it may be a way for small businesses to do a very targeted local marketing. The ad is still limited to the 140 character limit. Twitter will only charge the advertiser when the ad gets a response.? A response can be in the form of a follow, a retweet, or a click on the link.

Any social media strategy should be implemented carefully within the framework of a larger Online Presence Management strategy. ?As I would advise any of my Indianapolis SEO and OPM clients, if a social media presence is an important part of your overall online presence management strategy, sponsored tweets may now offer a very cost effective way for building a social media presence for your small business.

Rep. Anderson Commentary on End-of-Course Exams | Doc ...

Howdy Friends!

As many of you may have heard, Texas?s new standardized tests (the STAAR exams) have brought about some hardships to 9th graders beginning this year. As the end-of-course exams are being initiated, they are slated to constitute 15% of the students? final grade; however, there is a lack of clarity in the statute, leaving districts with questions of how the 15% would be applied. I wanted to update you on legislative efforts to relieve students of these unintended consequences.

During the 82nd Legislature last year, I co-authored and supported legislative relief for excessive testing, while maintaining our state?s commitment to increased rigor in course work, and meaningful assessment of progress and postsecondary readiness (House Bill 500). Although it did not pass the Senate, it provided a reference point for recent discussions between legislative leadership and Commissioner Robert Scott of the Texas Education Agency.

The Legislature?s intent on the matter of preparing our future generation for the significant challenges which lay ahead is clear: while rigorous standards matter, assessment instruments need to be based on core curriculum and course work in order to properly determine progress.

This is why there is a transition period for school ratings as the STAAR is implemented. As this policy applies to schools, so should it apply to students. It never would have been the intent of the Legislature to place our current 9th graders in a difficult situation. Educators, and students, deserve this first year of the STAAR to determine how the exam relates to adopted course plans, and be able to make adjustments from there.

Other legislators are coming to this very same conclusion. The Chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Florence Shapiro, has contacted Commissioner Scott to request a one-year deferral under law. This request seems feasible, if we can gather legislative intent agreement from both chambers.

I have also been in contact with the Commissioner, both by phone and letter (attached). At the end of the week, the Chair of the House Committee on Public Education, Representative Rob Eissler, will also request this one-year deferral, therefore making it a consensus action of legislative intent. I have co-signed Chairman Eissler?s letter, along with many other legislators. Indications from the Commissioner are that this deferral will be granted, which is a much more common-sense approach to this transition period.

The Legislature, together with education stakeholders, has made significant strides to increase standards. Those previously adopted policies should remain in place. However, I expect this issue to be revisited in the 83rd Legislature next year in order that meaningful and sensible strategy can be implemented.

Fencing Drills ? Bouting Drills

As fencers develop technically and tactically, their training should progressively resemble the circumstances they?ll face competing. Clearly, elevated focus on fencing practice bouts is a element of this transition. However, drills remain important in an effort to build the amount of repetitions of abilities required to develop high amounts of proficiency. Within this training atmosphere, the bouting drill provides a helpful accessory for training.

Created for intermediate and advanced fencers, the bouting drill continues to have a restricted quantity of technical choices, a couple of attacks and a couple of protection. However, the drill itself more carefully resembles a bout:

(1) The coach identifies the experience and reaction for that drill by supplying the particular techniques to be used.

(2) The fencers begin in a conventional exchange drill of countless cycles to create their technical execution to readiness. This area of the drill shouldn?t be prolonged, as technical perfection isn?t the goal. Rather the fencer ought to be psychologically prepared to fight and also have the particular skill inside an acceptable selection of performance. One way possible to bound this really is to limit the amount of repetitions to that particular which may fit the bill being an immediate pre-bout warm-up competing.

(3) Then your drill transitions by getting rid of the exchange feature. Now either fencer can advance or retreat, attack, defend, or counterattack. Who initiates and who responds is dependent greatly around the initiative and fighting spirit from the fencers.

(4) Soon after a success is obtained, the fencers take distance and resume the experience. This might be done in the place on the ground in which the hit happened. A far more realistic choice is revisit the on guard lines to resume the drill.

This drill could be run for any set period of time throughout the audience lesson. Realism is elevated when the drill operates until one fencer scores 5 valid touches or maybe no more than 3 minutes running time is permitted. Immediate rotation to utilize a brand new partner turns into a simulation from the rapid pace of bouts inside a pool that?s being double removed and boosts the stress degree of the drill.

The bouting drill is a step lacking the practice bout. By restricting the strategy for use, still it concentrates on technical development and forces the fencers to create the particular abilities operate in a mobile atmosphere. However, the free play component of the drill models conditions around the strip inside a competition, which realism could be enhanced by setting a little limit, imposing a period limit, and rotating the participants.

Cyclone Giovanna crossed over the island of Madagascar leaving flooding and damages in its wake and has now entered the Mozambique Channel. NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image that showed a ragged eye still exists, and the storm is regaining strength in the warm Channel waters.

Once Giovanna traversed the island nation of Madagascar and entered the Mozambique Channel, the body of water between Madagascar and Mozambique on the African mainland, NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured a visible image with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument.

MODIS captured the image at 10:45 UTC (5:45 a.m. EST) on February 15. The image showed that convection (rising air that forms the thunderstorms that make up the storm) had diminished greatly in the northwestern quadrant of the storm,. The MODIS image also showed that thunderstorms were now building around the rest of the tropical storm as a result ove moving into the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel. Sea surface temperatures of at least 80 Fahrenheit (26.6 Celsius) are needed to maintain a tropical cyclone, and temperatures in the Channel are as warm as ~88 Fahrenheit (31 Celsius).

On February 15, 2012 at 0300 UTC (Feb. 14 at 10 p.m. EST), Tropical Storm Giovanna's maximum sustained winds were near 40 knots (46 mph/74 kph). Tropical Cyclone Giovanna's center was located approximately 250 nautical miles west-southwest of Antananarivo, Madagascar, near 20.8 South and 42.4 East. It is moving to the west-southwest at 13 knots (15 mph/24 kph).

BBC News reports that at least two people died from storm related incidents, and the town Vatomandry, south of where Giovanna made landfall in east-central Madagascar, has experienced a lot of damage. BBC News reports that at least 60 percent of homes in the town were damaged or destroyed. Trees, phone and power lines have been downed, especially in eastern areas, as recovery efforts continue.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center uses satellite data and forecast computer models to create forecasts. The current forecast for Giovanna now takes it on a westerly track toward Mozambique by the week's end. The forecast also indicates that wind shear will increase, which will prevent the storm from strengthening further. Residents along the southeastern coast of Mozambique should monitor the path of this tropical storm.

Death, the Body, Sex, Life | Read React Review

It had been a good morning so far. My two classes went well. As usual on MWF, I met my husband, who had also just finished teaching, at the bottom of the stairs and we walked together to his office to catch up, talking about camps for the kids next week, finalizing summer cottage rental plans, griping about the usual university business, and, naturally, detouring into Star Trek Deep Space Nine and the origin of the word ?ferengi? and whether the Ferengi were portrayed in an anti-Semitic way, and what other ethnicities might be said, stereotypically, to have big noses. As I crossed campus to my office in the philosophy building, it felt like spring. I noticed black capped chickadees at the feeders outside the Union, and I imagined I felt the sun?s warmth on my cheek, wan though it was. As I considered unzipping my down jacket, I decided I?ve lived in Maine too long if a 30 degree day with snow on the ground counts as ?springlike.?

When I returned to my office, I listened to a vague, brief message from my Hospice volunteer coordinator. I dreaded calling him back, because I knew what it was: my hospice friend had died this morning. I was shocked: I had just spent the afternoon with him a few days ago. He was animated and sharp. He told me about long car trips with his wife back in the days when he was a high school teacher. She would read student essays out loud, and he would tell her what to mark them. She would argue with him, and it would make the time fly by. When you spend a lot of time with dying people, you begin to believe that you can tell when it?s going to happen. What a joke. I was not ready for him to go. I thought we had many more afternoons, listening to the Bach station from the coast, sipping tea, and talking about his life.

On Monday night, I co-led a humanities workshop with my colleague on death and dying. Truth be told, I did that for my chair, and was not looking forward to staying so late on campus, missing dinner with my family, and losing work time. But we found we had gathered a strange assortment of faculty, administrators, staff, and students, who all, for their own reasons, really wanted to be there. One faculty member was dealing with the loss of his father. Another faculty member, in communications, was working on a project in which he had to read narratives of parents about the moment they lost their child, and he had nowhere else to go with his strange feelings of grief.

Our own body is in the world as the heart is in the organism: it keeps the visible spectacle constantly alive; the body animates and nourishes the world inwardly, and forms with it a system. (Maurice Merleau-Ponty)

One of the things we were trying to get across, via Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, and others, was a fact that is often hidden from us: our bodies maintain our life world. So a crisis with the body can become a crisis of our entire world. From the point of view of phenomenologists, we can never understand death until we understand what it means to be a lived body.

Our bodies are the center of our activity in the world. Think about it: we may say that ?the paper is lying on the desk next to the clock?, but we don?t say, of ourselves, ?the arm is lying on the desk next to the clock?, although it might well be. And it is because of the centrality of our bodies to our experience that they are so intimately related to our selves. Indeed, there is hardly a distinction to be made between body and self. Yet, at the same time, our bodies are in constant communion with the world that is not us. The body is unavoidably socially expressive, but it is at the same time what is being expressed. Following Wittgenstein, the contorted face, the redness, the loudness, is the rage, not just the expression of the rage. The body is thus essentially personal, and essential social, and essentially physical, and we must try to understand it in all these dimensions.

Of course, this spatiality ? personal, social, and physical ? is imbued with temporality. We are always in time, and perhaps one of the reasons aging makes us nervous is that our bodies seem to be the most permanent, intimate parts of ourselves. If my body (as I know it, as it is familiar to me) goes, what is left of me? As human being, our mortality is always a part of the horizon of our being. Heidegger has written, ?as soon as man comes to life, he is at once old enough to die.? In that sense, no death is ?untimely? because death is the condition of life. We talk about death all the time (?did you hear? Whitney Houston just died.?), but it is always in terms of what Heidegger called ?the they?, never as our own, ineliminably personal death. This is captured perfectly by Marcel Duchamp?s grave:

"Besides, it is always other people who die."

?

I recently reread Forever by Judy Blume. Near the end of the novel, Katherine is teaching tennis at a summer camp, and becomes friendly and flirtatious with a fellow instructor, Theo, despite the fact that she has a boyfriend back home. When Kat?s grandfather dies, she seeks Theo out and tries to have sex with him. He tells her that she is having a normal reaction to death, trying to prove she?s alive, but he doesn?t want their relationship to begin that way. On the one hand, I think Theo?s resistance was honorable, the right choice. On the other, I wonder if he wasn?t making a false distinction between Kat?s self and Kat?s body.

Another recent read was a Spice Brief, an erotic short, by Anne Calhoun, called What She Needs. I was reminded as I read it of how well erotic writers ? good ones, that is ? bring our attention to the features of embodiment I?ve outlined above, to the fact that we don?t just live through our bodies, but live with and in communion with them.

In a very different, and more uncomfortable way, mystery writers also call us to attention to our bodies. Corpses are socially expressive. They have many of the same features of other bodies. In a very real sense, the person is still with us when we behold the corpse, even if the ?self? is not. Good writers can communicate the social and expressive power of a corpse in a way that reminds us of our own finitude and embodied selves.

So, I?ve been thinking about death all week. From both theoretical and personal perspectives. Death calls to mind the many ways I am grateful to writers who explore, and thus encourage me to explore, the features of bodily existence that I too often take for granted.

Young adults allowed to stay on parents' health insurance have improved access to care

Monday, February 13, 2012

Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that laws permitting children to stay on their parents' health insurance through age 26 result in improved access to health care compared to states without those laws. This analysis indicates the potential positive impact of a key provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA). The study appears in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The ACA requires private insurance companies to support children on their parents' policies through age 26. The Mount Sinai research team analyzed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and compared the period before the state laws were enacted (2002 to 2004) to the period after the state laws went into effect (2008 to 2009). They found that in the 34 states that had such laws, the affected patients had greater rates of health insurance, were more likely to identify a personal physician and receive a physical exam, and were less likely to forgo care due to cost.

"These research findings will inform our understanding of what to expect from the federal health reform provision that allows those up to age 26 to join their parents' policy," said Alex Blum, MD, MPH, lead author of the study and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Evidence and Policy at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Our results predict that many more young people will have a personal doctor and regular checkups, and no longer have to go without care due to cost. These are critical components to provide health security to young people just when they are starting out on their own."

The authors conclude that their findings may underestimate the impact of the ACA. Unlike state laws, the ACA applies to all individuals up to age 26 and is not subject to limitations on self-insured health insurance plans.

"The Employee Retirement Income Security Act exempts all self-insured health insurance plans from the state laws we studied," said Dr. Blum. "Nearly half of all Americans have self- insured policies. It is possible that we only identified half of the likely impact of the ACA provision."

Additionally, six state laws were more generous than the ACA's provision and extended eligibility beyond 26 years. "Four states that enacted laws prior to the ACA imposed premium caps to limit parental costs," Dr. Blum explained. "The ACA could be amended to reach even more young adults by raising the limits to age 29 and by limiting the premiums, as some states have done."
