Frame rate debate rages on with 48 fps projection of 3D Hobbit footage

With his use of Red cameras, 3ality rigs, and high frame rate 3D technology, no one can accuse Peter Jackson of being stuck in the past. Need more evidence of his anti-luddism? He just gave the first projection of footage from his 3D opus "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in its full 48 fps glory at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. With the public having endured 80 years of 24 fps film-watching, Jackson appealed to viewers to allow their eyes to adjust to the doubled rate during the ten minute screening. But the reaction showed that public acceptance might take a while. One projectionist compared it to made-for-TV fare, and others referenced Mexican soap-operas and TruMotion. The reply to these criticisms by Jackson (and James Cameron) has always been that 3D is better suited to faster frame rates than 2D -- making it more immersive, reducing headaches and improving stereoscopy. We'll have to wait for the film's release this December to find out whether he's right, or if this attempt at high frame speeds will go the way of Showscan.

Google?s Latest TV Ad: How Chrome Can Help You Get Your Ex Back

Do you hate how things ended between you and your ex and are you trying to get him/her back? Google apparently knows what that feels like and wants you to use Chrome to set things right. At least, that's what it looks like judging from Google's latest TV commercial for Chrome, which debuted last night. In this latest ad, Mark (markpotter7@gmail.com) is trying hard to get his ex Jen to go out for coffee with him because he still hates "how things ended" (why they broke up, the ad sadly never tells us). To woo his ex back (or at least convince her to go out for coffee with him), Mark then uses a steady stream of Google Docs spreadsheets, Picasa photos and YouTube videos to make his point.

With the new update, a new, blue folder called Remarks and labeled with Dropbox will appear in your notes once you link your Dropbox account with Remarks. Any notes you create in this folder will automagically sync up with Dropbox -- you no longer have to manually send a note to Dropbox. It works like a charm.

Chalk another one up for the mobile revolution: There were 56 million tablets purchased worldwide in 2011, but a new report from Forrester Research predicts that number will explode in the years ahead: its researchers say that there will be 375 million tablets sold by 2016, representing a compound annual growth rate of 46 percent, and that by 2016 there will be 760 million tablets in use overall. That will still put tablets a ways behind PCs -- there will be 2 billion PCs in use in 2016. But combined with new products like frames (essentially docks for tablets to amp up their functionality), Forrester says that tablets will gradually become the computing device of choice among consumers -- especially among those in emerging markets, whose first home computing device will more likely be a tablet than a desktop or laptop PC.

Don't Let the Predictions Change your Preparations!

As we approach the beginning of another Hurricane Season on June 1, we start to hear a lot of predictions.?? Will it be an average year, below average, or above average?? How many storms are we likely to see?? While these are interesting questions, we need to guard against getting caught up in these news headlines.?? One only has to think back twenty years to 1992, a year that was predicted as ?below average? and indeed only saw 6 named storms.? Unfortunately for Southern Florida, the first named storm in this ?below average? year was Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm that was the costliest hurricane in US history at the time.?

The lesson that we should take from that 1992 hurricane season is simple: don?t let the predictions change your preparations!? ?Hurricane Andrew taught us to always be on our guard during hurricane season, no matter what the predictions say.? ?The good news is that planning for hurricanes is one of the simplest threats to address in your business continuity plan.? There is a predictable season for these storms and there are generally good forecasts available to announce a storm?s arrival with plenty of time to put plans into action.?

The time to update or begin your hurricane plan is now, before the season begins.? Some of the issues that need to be addressed in your plan may take time to investigate and resolve, so give yourself plenty of time and start now.? Here are a few items to consider to get started:

Employees ? get everyone?s emergency contact info, local and out-of-state, and ask each employee where they plan to go during an evacuation.? Help them start planning for their families and homes.

Customers ? ask them about their expectations from your business before, during, and after a hurricane so you can address these issues and plan to meet their needs

Building ? identify who is responsible for securing and boarding up your building and when the building will be shut down and re-opened following an evacuation

Go Kits ? ask all employees to mark the items in their offices that are critical to performing their job duties, so others can pack up these items if they are not present during an evacuation

Policies ? determine how you will pay employees during office closures due to storms (PTO, sick, vacation, or special ?emergency? pay?)

Alternate Site ? identify an alternate location to conduct business if you can?t return to your primary location, and make sure your employees are willing and able to work from that alternate location

Insurance ? make sure your current policy covers flood damage to your contents, has business income and additional expense coverage, and covers the current replacement value of your assets

Technology ? determine how phones will be forwarded, how emails will be received, and how important files and systems will be accessed remotely during an evacuation and long-term recovery at another location

These are just a few of the items to consider to get started.? Remember the golden rule to business continuity planning: the best plan is the one with the most options.? Make sure you have multiple contact phone numbers, multiple alternate locations to work from, multiple copies of critical data and documents, multiple people cross-trained to perform critical functions, and so on.? In doing so you will not only develop a good hurricane plan for your business, but you will build the foundation for a good business continuity plan for all other threats to your business.?

On?April 21,?the fifth annual?Record Store Day?will get off to a rockin' start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.

You remember records, right? Not only are the big 12-inch albums and 7-inch 45s still among us, but so are their landlords, old-fashioned independent record stores, which celebrate their own special day every spring. From Tulsa to Tokyo, San Diego to Sydney, the gritty neighborhood purveyors of the petroleum platter will party with contests, free giveaways, in-store performances by local faves and big stars, and exclusive limited-edition 45 and LP releases. Among those are new singles by Coldplay, Florence + the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, comedian Jimmy Fallon, and many more. Exclusive Record Store Day LPs will include new 12-inch vinyl pressings from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and The Black Keys, and rarities from jazz icons Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.

Billboard magazine attributed a seismic 182,000 unit sales to last April's Record Store Day. Rocker Jack White exhorts the rock troops to "show respect for the tangible music that you've dedicated your careers and lives to, and help It from becoming nothing more than disposable digital data."

And speaking of analog, music producer Gary Calamar and Billboard writer Phil Gallo have penned a 240-page companion piece to the annual event, Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again. It combines a timeline of the evolution of recording media ? from Edison's wax cylinders to today's MP3 files ? with affectionate portraits and reminiscences of America's iconic record shops and chains, some now defunct, some just plain funky. We meet up in the listening booth at Hollywood's long-gone Wallich's Music City to spin the latest from Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley before skipping a half century ahead to pack in like sardines with adoring fans at an in-store performance by Sir Paul McCartney at Amoeba Music, the largest record store in the world. (It's also known as "Godzilla" by the scores of indie record stores it has driven out of business.)

The Obvious Corporation, the ideas incubator and firm started by Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Jason Goldman, has announced its latest investment?online community Neighborland. While it's unclear how much the startup raised, other backers include True Ventures, Lerer Ventures, SV Angel, CrunchFund, and Voodoo Ventures. From the startup's site, it appears New Orleans-based startup Neighborland is an online community for local neighborhood residents to share their ideas and insights for cities, support neighbors? ideas, and connect with fellow residents who share similar interests. It aims to provide residents, neighborhood organizations, economic development groups, and municipalities with a simple platform to "connect and make good things happen." And it's a centralized place where people can share ideas and figure out how to make those ideas a reality.

Rome has given the centurions a deadline to clear out. The solders in question aren't from the ranks of an ancient legion, but are modern-day performers who pose for tourist?photos at the Colosseum.

Men and women decked out in chest plates and helmets eke out a?tax-free living at Rome?s most popular attraction, posing for photos with foreign?visitors for 5 or 10 euros. Disoriented, jet lagged, or simply scared,?tourists have been known to pay up to 50 euros ($67). Some have been roughed?up when they refuse.

Arrests were made last summer in an undercover operation with police?in tunics and sandals handcuffing centurions and gladiators for?ripping off tourists. A recent Italian media report cited a policeman?as saying the centurions are all ex-convicts, ?every last one of?them.?

Now the city government says ?basta!? and wants them to pack up their?swords, shields, and ensigns and clear out by April 6.

?This will end badly. We?ll wage a revolution. We?ll burn down the?Coliseum rather than move from here,? a 21st-century centurion?recently told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Along with the fake ancient Roman soldiers, the city aims to rid?itself of the vast illegal industry of food and souvenir vendors that?feeds off the 6 million people who every year visit the site where?Russell Crowe avenged his family?s murder in the 2000 sword-and-sandal blockbuster "Gladiator."

City and national officials say they are defending?Rome-the-living-museum from an image akin to theme parks where?visitors feast on fast food and ham it up for the camera with?fairytale characters.

But the Italian economy is in recession and its prisons overcrowded so government bureaucrats should be vigilant for unrest?in the legionary ranks. They might want to reconsider a plan that puts?ex-cons out of work.

While it's hard to get upset when your company is raking in just shy of $13 billion over just three months, we're sure Intel's investors are a little sad to see revenue drop across all business divisions. With a net income of $2.7 billion, profits dropped nearly 19 percent from last quarter and everyone from the data center group to the PC client group saw revenues fall by significant margins. There's no reason to worry about Chipzilla, though. The company's seemingly constant record smashing quarters had to come to an end sometime and we're sure with its entrance into the smartphone market this year new streams of revenue will start pouring in shortly. Canon shows off prototype 30-inch 4K reference display, won't put a price tag on love

With 4K cameras suddenly popping up everywhere we look at NAB 2012, it's little surprise that Canon is showing off this matching 30-inch prototype intended for the very professionals tasked with mastering video shot by its latest hardware. Like the retina display, it produces an effect where no matter how close you're standing it's still impossible to pick out the individual pixels, and easily matched what we'd seen from a prototype 20-inch 4K LCD from Panasonic at CES. The people we spoke to who handled some of the work on Canon's demo footage preferred it to their 2K projectors for the clarity and ability to get pixel accurate representations of the source material, plus it probably fits more easily into a production suite. The big question from all who see this in person is when will it be available and for how much, and while Canon says it's due to ship this year, we're on our own to speculate about the (surely astronomical) price.
