Vanderbilt wins Music City Bowl to cap 9-4 season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The Southeastern Conference is so strong that even Vanderbilt, yes Vandy, is winning like the Commodores haven't in nearly a century.

And coach James Franklin says everyone better get used to it.

Jordan Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Commodores capped their best season since 1915 by defeating North Carolina State 38-24 in the Music City Bowl on Monday.

"We're not going anywhere," a smiling and teary Franklin said.

The Commodores finished 9-4 for their best record since going 9-1 in 1915, and it's only the third time the smallest and only private university in the SEC has won as many as nine games in a season.

Vandy closed the season with seven straight wins for its longest streak since an eight-game run in 1948, and its 15 wins over the past two seasons is the program's best total since 1926 and 1927.

"When you're throwing out dates like 1915, you know that's a very, very, very long time," Franklin said. "Talk about these guys great-great grandparents. Seven-game win streak is the team's longest win streak since 1948, and we also currently have the longest win streak in the SEC, which we're very, very proud of."

Vanderbilt forced a season-high five turnovers, including four in the first half, and turned those into 17 points.

Interim coach Dana Bible ran N.C. State (7-6) after Tom O'Brien was fired at the end of the regular season. It was the Wolfpack's fifth game of the season with at least four turnovers, and it helped wipe out a 424-225 advantage in total offense.

Bible, who said he was head coach for another minute or two, took the blame for two of the interceptions for being aggressive.

"We took the other approach," Bible said. "Again a Southeast Conference team, Southeast Conference talent, those type things. We weren't going to play it safe. We weren't going to play back on this team. We were going to be attacking on it, and if they made a play on it, more power to them."

This was the 27th bowl for N.C. State, which had won its last two postseason games. But a team that ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in turnovers couldn't overcome its own mistakes, which also included a bad shotgun snap that cost the Wolfpack 21 yards on the opening drive.

Franklin got a contract extension a month ago for guiding the Dores to a second straight bowl game for the first time in school history. Franklin didn't change anything that got his Commodores here as he went for it on fourth down, used the wildcat repeatedly and even had senior running back Zac Stacy attempt a halfback pass to Rodgers.

Vandy wound up running for 117 yards, with Stacy getting 107 on 25 carries, mostly in the wildcat.

"Don't fix nothing if it is not broke," Stacy said.

Teammate Jordan Matthews called the offense the "wildZac."

"We could have let him kick today and he would have done great," Matthews said. "Any way you get the ball in his hands or around him it is going to work."

The Commodores took control from the opening drive, moving 65 yards for a touchdown that put them ahead to stay. Officials initially called Chris Boyd out of bounds, but the video review showed the sophomore got the toes of his right foot down for a 5-yard TD pass from Rodgers.

Commodores safety Kenny Ladler picked off a Glennon pass at the North Carolina State 45 for Vanderbilt's fifth interception in three games.

"It wasn't about going three-and-out," Glennon said of the Wolfpack's struggles. "It was just a matter of turning the ball over."

It was just a sign of what was to come in the first half. Johnell Thomas stripped Wolfpack freshman Shadrach Thornton late in the first quarter, and Derreon Herring stripped N.C. State tight end Asa Watson of the ball after a nice catch. Ladler recovered that ball.

And safety Eric Samuels intercepted Glennon with 54 seconds left in the first half.

Vanderbilt turned the third turnover into a touchdown, making it 14-0 in the second quarter. Stacy, the school's all-time leading rusher, scored on a 6-yard run with 10:08 left.

Tony Creecy responded with a 1-yard TD run for the Wolfpack. But Vanderbilt stuck with the wildcat, and Wesley Tate scored on a 7-yard TD run for a 21-7 lead with 3:47 left in the second.

Tobias Palmer, who struggled catching the ball on his first two kickoff returns, caught the next cleanly and ran untouched 94 yards for a TD that made it 21-14.

Rodgers tossed his second TD pass, a screen that Matthews took 18 yards to the end zone, to restore the 14-point lead and make it 28-14 at the break. That matched the most points the Commodores had scored in any of their five previous bowl games. Rodgers ran for a 15-yard TD with 5:11 left that sealed the victory.

"They were better today," N.C. State safety Earl Wolff said.

Trey Wilson picked off a Glennon pass intended for tight end Charlie Hegedus in the end zone on the opening drive of the third quarter only to be stopped by his own teammate, tackle Jared Morse, at the N.C. State 35. It was the kind of mistake that cost Vandy in years past.

Franklin immediately ran up to Morse yelling at the junior, making it clear that's not allowed at Vandy these days.

"I'm sure there will be some pictures of that over the Internet," Morse said.

Stone Canyon offers custom-built homes surrounding golf course ...

New builders and new leadership have brought a new energy to Stone Canyon, a community of custom-built homes surrounding Stone Canyon Golf Course on the border between Blue Springs and Independence.

Stone Canyon, once the victim of an uncertain economy, is now a thriving new-home community.?Fourteen homes have closed since this new team took over last year. We have five custom new construction sales pending and multiple others in the design and negotiation process,? said Sally Moore with Keller Williams Eastland Partners, who exclusively markets the community.Stone Canyon has much to offer new-home buyers, she added. It is built around the Stone Canyon Golf Course, the only Greg Norman Signature Design golf course in Missouri, which is ranked as one of the top three public courses in Missouri. Stone Canyon has a Blue Springs address and children attend Blue Springs schools, including the nearby Sunny Pointe Elementary and Sunny Vale Middle schools. However, since Stone Canyon is officially within the borders of Independence, residents enjoy lower city taxes and lower utility rates.?Stone Canyon is just minutes from the new Centerpoint Medical Center, great shopping and services along with some of the best restaurants in eastern Jackson County,? Moore said. ?Access to Interstate 70 is just down the street. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to downtown Kansas City.?But even with minutes-away access to all the urban conveniences, Stone Canyon is nestled in a quiet area with little traffic or congestion and expansive views of the surrounding area.?We are on a ridge that allows you to see for miles,? Moore said. ?The sunsets are spectacular. At night you can see city lights in all directions.?These factors have contributed to Stone Canyon?s recent success and allowed it to take early advantage of the resurging real estate market.?As others are just now starting to feel the positive effects of our continually improving economy, we here at Stone Canyon have already been experiencing the rebirth of new construction for many months,? Moore said. ?That?s because we understood from the very beginning that the secret to success is delivering a customized home building experience with an unprecedented level of service and quality.?To provide that level of quality, Stone Canyon chose two builders with stellar reputations, Robert Foushee of Foushee Homes Inc. and Kevin Stallings of Dreams & Design Building. Foushee has 17 years of building experience and Stallings has 20.?Building my first spec house to sell in the early years was an eye opener, but I maintained the attitude that if I did it well and offered my customers something better, I would develop a reputation for quality and treating people right,? Foushee said. That attitude has brought Foushee success, rave reviews from his past clients and repeat customers. His promise to his clients is to provide them with quality construction and a friendly experience. The name of Stallings? business, Dreams & Design Building, says it all. ?If a customer dreams it, I can usually design and build it,? he said.Stallings takes pride in listening to customers, then showing them a template design that will meet most of their needs, but taking that template and modifying it so that customers get exactly the home they envisioned.?I never build the same home twice,? Stallings said, adding that he refuses to cut corners to hold down costs. ?I build every home as if it were mine. I won?t accept less than quality construction, I won?t rush the process and I won?t cut corners.?Stallings also knows the importance of building energy-efficient homes and has his homes independently inspected to meet Energy Star standards, providing a finished home that is between 45 and 50 percent more efficient that homes built to current building codes.Foushee and Stallings offer clients a variety of home designs, including ranch, 11/2-story, reverse 11/2-story and two-story plans with prices starting at $275,000. Prospective buyers can see the quality of Stallings? construction by visiting the model home at 4211 S. White Sands Court. They can also visit Foushee?s completed inventory home that is now available. Foushee also has another inventory home under construction that will be move-in ready in about 90 days. Stallings is just starting construction on two inventory homes that should be completed by summer.Prospective buyers also may see a variety of home plans from both builders at the model home that can be used as a basis for a custom designed and built home, Moore said.?It is amazing to see how these builders take a home from concept to design to completion for their clients,? Moore said. ?And they walk their customers through the process every step of the way. Each home is individualized.?One client, whose mother will be living with them, needed a home that was ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliant and that home was designed with an elevator,? she continued. ?Another customer wants to live in his home forever, so he is also having an elevator installed.?Stone Canyon is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The?storm?began Saturday afternoon and ended by Sunday morning, with some power outages but no reports of critical injuries or major property damage. Dry weather was expected for days in southern New England, although strong winds may chill the bones.

Meteorologist Frank Nocera of the National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass., said southern New England appeared to be the hardest hit.

Six to 12 inches of snow fell in Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts, including Foxborough where the New England Patriots play. The exception was at Boston and the Cape Cod area where rain was mixed with snow. There two to four inches fell. Many residents lost power after wet snow piled up on power lines.

The?storm?spread over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another?storm?that moved in from the nation's midsection.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow, and drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph. Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

New genomics study shows ancestry could help solve disease riddles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Explosive advancement in human genome sequencing opens new possibilities for identifying the genetic roots of certain diseases and finding cures. However, so many variations among individual genomes exist that identifying mutations responsible for a specific disease has in many cases proven an insurmountable challenge. But now a new study by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), Scripps Health, and Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) reveals that by comparing the genomes of diseased patients with the genomes of people with sufficiently similar ancestries could dramatically simplify searches for harmful mutations, opening new treatment possibilities.

The work, reported recently in the journal Frontiers in Genetics: Applied Genetic Epidemiology, should speed the search for the causes of many diseases and provide critical guidance to the genomics field for maximizing the potential benefits of growing genome databases.

Much work is already under way to sequence the DNA of people suffering from diseases with unknown causes, called idiopathic conditions, to find the roots of their problems. Unlike more complex conditions such as diabetes, in some cases a limited number of genetic defects, or even a single mutation, can cause an idiopathic disease. Identifying those critical mutations can lead to effective treatments for previously mysterious problems.

Complicated Searches

While there have been some successes, in many other instances the genetic basis of an idiopathic disease remains elusive. Among other groups, The National Human Genome Research Institute runs searches for idiopathic disease sufferers and is able to find offending gene sequences only about 30 percent of the time. "One explanation for that other 70 percent might be that the diseases are enormously complex," said the new study's senior author Nicholas Schork, a professor at TSRI, director of research for Scripps Health's genomic medicine program, and director of biostatistics and bioinformatics at STSI, "but it could be that they're still searching in the noise."

The new work offers a likely filter for much of that noise. The results show that comparing a person's DNA sequence against existing genomes for those whose ancestry is not sufficiently similar, as is typically the case, can cause serious problems. Countless differences that seem unique to a patient might instead be DNA variants carried by everyone with the same ancestry. A researcher might, for instance, identify hundreds of variants and not be able to zero in on the one responsible for a disease.

But the new results show that comparing closer ancestry matches will dramatically reduce the number of variants identified as potentially responsible for a disease, reducing a search to a workable number.

For the work, the team developed a tool called the Scripps Genome Adviser. This processing framework uses a supercomputer to incorporate a variety of databases and algorithms to identify DNA variants in a particular genome relative to reference genomes. It then uses algorithms to analyze these variants and predict whether they have any physiological effects, and if so what those might be.

The team began with nearly 60 whole human genome databases and ran three key types of computing experiments. First the researchers identified the number of variants in the reference human genomes and found that on average each has millions of variants, about 12,000 of which have functional effects. Then the scientists looked at the rates at which variants appeared in various ancestry lines.

Honoring Ancestry

Importantly, the scientists didn't stop there. They deliberately inserted a mutation known to cause disease into a genome, then ran this genome through the Adviser to see how effectively it could identify that known variant as unique.

When the team ran the searches comparing that altered genome against a reference panel of genomes that included different ancestries, the known variant remained effectively lost in a sea of other variants. But comparison against genomes of similar ancestry dramatically reduced the number of variants identified, allowing identification of the inserted disease-causing gene.

A study published simultaneously with the Scripps team's paper by Professor Carlos Bustamante and colleagues from Stanford University also pointed to ancestry's importance, but this is the first time a team has been able to look at the problem on the whole-genome scale. "Others have indeed recognized ancestry as important," said Schork, "but no one had shown how much it could haunt a particular study, especially on a whole genome basis."

As importantly, prior to this study it wasn't clear how to address the ancestry issue. But the new study provides clear direction. The team calculated that identification of the vast majority of ancestral variants can be performed successfully with a reference panel of less than 20 genomes -- though it could well take more to identify a particular ancestry group's rarest deviations. Of course, most people have more than one ancestry line, meaning that in practice a patient's reference panel would need to include multiple reference groups.

This result should act as a guide for continuing genomics work. Many ancestries are already well represented, meaning that assembling an effective reference panel is possible in some cases. But the number of whole genomes from a particular ancestral group isn't the only consideration. Ideally, reference genomes need to be from relatively disease-free people, meaning subjects who lived to an old age without major complications from genetic conditions.

Recognizing the importance of ancestral comparisons, researchers and companies can now deliberately work to fill any holes. "Building those sorts of resources could only benefit the community," said Schork. In fact, Schork, Ali Torkamani and others at Scripps are collaborating with Complete Genomics, Inc., a whole genome sequencing company in Mountain View, CA, to develop appropriate reference panels for clinicians and researchers.

Deciphering Diseases

Schork and his colleagues are already working toward broader application of their results using an increasingly advanced version of the tool. While processing a single person's genome to identify and analyze variants took about four days when the project began, today the Adviser can accomplish the task in about 30 minutes.

Along with the paper's lead author Torkamani, Schork is a founder of a company called Cypher Genomics that has licensed the Scripps Genome Adviser for disease-focused research. The teams in both industry and academia hope not only to continue idiopathic disease research, but also to apply similar principles to search for the causes of more complex congenital conditions. "The broader message of our work is that you have to take ancestry into account no matter what disease you're studying," said Schork.

Durable orders show business investment still weak

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. companies remained cautious in September and held back on orders for long-lasting manufactured goods that signal investment plans. Weak business investment has contributed to slower economic growth.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that orders for durable goods jumped 9.9 a percent last month. While it was the biggest gain in nearly three years, most of the September gain was driven by a tremendous spike in aircraft orders, which are very volatile and plummeted in the previous month.

When taking out transportation, orders rose just 2 percent. And demand for core capital goods, such as machinery and equipment, were unchanged in September. Core capital goods are considered a proxy for business investment plans. Those orders rose only slightly in August after steep declines in July and June.

Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays, said the report "painted a soft picture of business demand" in the July-September quarter. He said the weakness had prompted him to trim his estimate for economic growth in the quarter from 2 percent down to 1.8 percent.

Durable goods are products expected to last at least three years. Orders can fluctuate sharply from month to month.

Demand is sharply lower this year, which has weakened manufacturing and hampered economic growth. High unemployment and low pay have kept consumers from spending. Businesses have held back on investing in machinery and equipment. And slower global growth has dampened demand for U.S. exports.

Economists are concerned that businesses could pull back further if Congress doesn't reach an agreement to avert steep tax hikes and government spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January.

There is some indication that U.S. factory activity could be improving. A closely watched survey from the Institute for Supply Management, said manufacturing grew in September for the first time in four months. It was buoyed by a jump in new orders.

Americans also boosted their spending at retail businesses in September, buying more cars, appliances and furniture. Stronger consumer spending could help offset declining demand from overseas.

Still, the decline in U.S. manufacturing has slowed job growth. Manufacturing employment dropped by 16,000 in September after falling by 22,000 in August.

The weak job market has been a key topic in this year's presidential election, which is down to its final days. Voters will have one final employment report to consider, which comes out four days before Election Day.

The economy is not growing fast enough to generate much hiring. Growth slowed to a tepid annual rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, down from 2 percent in the previous quarter. Most economists see growth staying at or below 2 percent in the second half of the year. The Commerce Department will issue its first estimate of growth in the July-September quarter on Friday.

'Jesus,' 'ninja,' among worst passwords of 2012

3 hrs.

The next time you're asked to create?an 8-character password, don't choose "password." Despite it being the among worst possible choices, it remains the most common password?used on the Internet and posted by hackers.

No. 2 and No. 3, respectively are the tried-and-true weaklings?"123456" and "12345678." (Those two mean you can count???on being low-hanging fruit for hackers, that is.)

The info?comes from?SplashData, which makes password management applications. The company's?top 25 list of the "scariest" passwords was released with?Halloween as a peg, but there's no treats here for anyone, and possibly some nasty tricks.

Anthropologist finds evidence of hominin meat eating 1.5 million years ago: Eating meat may have 'made us human'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? A skull fragment unearthed by anthropologists in Tanzania shows that our ancient ancestors were eating meat at least 1.5 million years ago, shedding new light into the evolution of human physiology and brain development.

"Meat eating has always been considered one of the things that made us human, with the protein contributing to the growth of our brains," said Charles Musiba, Ph.D., associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado Denver, who helped make the discovery. "Our work shows that 1.5 million years ago we were not opportunistic meat eaters, we were actively hunting and eating meat."

The study was published October 3 in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE.

The two-inch skull fragment was found at the famed Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, a site that for decades has yielded numerous clues into the evolution of modern humans and is sometimes called `the cradle of mankind.'

The fragment belonged to a 2-year-old child and showed signs of porotic hyperostosis associated with anemia. According to the study, the condition was likely caused by a diet suddenly lacking in meat.

"The presence of anemia-induced porotic hyperostosis?indicates indirectly that by at least the early Pleistocene meat had become so essential to proper hominin functioning that its paucity or lack led to deleterious pathological conditions," the study said. "Because fossils of very young hominin children are so rare in the early Pleistocene fossil record of East Africa, the occurrence of porotic hyperostosis in one?suggests we have only scratched the surface in our understanding of nutrition and health in ancestral populations of the deep past."

Musiba said the evidence showed that the juvenile's diet was deficient in vitamin B12 and B9. Meat seems to have been cut off during the weaning process.

"He was not getting the proper nutrients and probably died of malnutrition," he said.

The study offers insights into the evolution of hominins including Homo sapiens. Musiba said the movement from a scavenger, largely plant-eating lifestyle to a meat-eating one may have provided the protein needed to grow our brains and give us an evolutionary boost.

Some scientists have argued that we became human when we became carnivorous-omnivorous creatures.

"Meat eating is associated with brain development," he said. "The brain is a large organ and requires a lot of energy. We are beginning to think more about the relationship between brain expansion and a high protein diet."

Humans are one of the few surviving species with such a large brain to body size ratio. Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, eat little meat and have far less brain capacity than humans, Musiba said.

"That separates us from our distant cousins," he said. "The question is what triggered our meat eating? Was it a changing environment? Was it the expansion of the brain itself? We don't really know."

Four students participating in the CU Denver Tanzania Field School were at Olduvai Gorge when the skull fragment was discovered.

"It was a great experience for them," said Musiba, director of the Field School and a native of Tanzania. "Hopefully, it will inspire even more students to come to Africa and help us find answers to the questions posed by these discoveries."

Viking Global looking for a strong run in Bet on your mobile - Bettor

Viking Global looking for a strong run in Bet on your mobile @ Williamhill.com Stakes

Viking Global missed out on a Grade A2 victory last time around, but she has a solid chance of making her team proud in the Bet on your mobile @ Williamhill.com Stakes at Newcastle in England on Tuesday, October 2, 2012. She is a very good runner and has been challenging her opponents with consistency since making her debut in the sport.

Therefore, it will be extremely difficult to stop the young bitch from taking the top spot in the Grade A2 contest, which is scheduled to kick off at 19:32 GMT. She has got both the speed and stamina to outperform her rivals in the 480 metres event, which will earn her a cash prize of ?127 in the end.

However, there are some other solid contenders for victory in the race as well and they will not make life easy for the rest of the greyhounds. One of them is Fagans Guest, who has been rated as the favourite to succeed. He has been given a general starting price of 5 to 2 and will definitely get the attention of the punters.

Furthermore, the seasoned dog will be starting the race from trap number six, which will give him an opportunity of attacking from the start. If he is quick out of the blocks, his opponents will not find it easy to catch him towards the end.

However, the J. Fenwick?s trained hound was unable to deliver a strong result from a similar position in his most recent outing, thus he will be low on confidence. He was rated as the favourite to succeed back then as well, but disappointed his fans with a fourth place finish in the end.

On the other hand, Viking Global ran extremely well in her most recent race and she will be full of confidence at the moment. She was up against some quality runners and was not given the best odds for victory.

Despite that, the D. Calvert?s trained bitch gave a tough time to her opponents and finished in second place by just three quarters. She will be looking to attack everyone in order to pressurise them, but she will be starting from trap number four and will have to be extremely careful about everything.

NYSF In Asheville: El Kimchi Korean BBQ | New York Street Food

(credit: NYSF)

So, we?re in Asheville, NC visiting family for a few days, which gave us an opportunity to check out the food truck scene here.

Every locale has their own push and pull between brick-and-mortar, food trucks, and local government. In NYC, it?s basically a free-for-all.

In Asheville, food trucks are confined to one parking lot in town (away from the restaurants), but there can be anywhere from 2-4 trucks in the lot, and they rotate daily.?The first food truck we tried was El Kimchi Korean BBQ.

The menu was truly a fusion of Korean and Mexican, with tacos, burritos, tortas and quesadillas, as well as bibimbap and rice bowls. We got 3 tacos for $5 (yes, we?re not in New York anymore). We also got the Daily Special, goon mandu, which was an order of 6 dumplings for $5.

(credit: NYSF)

The goon mandu were pan-fried dumplings, which came out piping hot. Inside the dumplings was a combination of pork, tofu and veggies that was more along the veggie line. The filling was finely minced, but the pork wasn?t readily apparent to our taste.

The goon mandu came with a soy & sesame dipping sauce that we liked. It wasn?t a strong dipping sauce, but added a nice flavor to the dumplings.

There were 5 choices for taco fillings, and we got spicy pork, beef bulgogi and chicken teriyaki.

(credit: NYSF)

The tacos came with lots of shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, homemade kimchi, and a lime wedge, plus the meats underneath.

These were tasty Korean tacos. The meats were very flavorful, from the spiciness of the pork, to the marinated beef bulgogi and the teriyaki chicken.

You can?t see the the meats under all the lettuce, but they came through loud and clear.

About the only downside was the single corn tortilla. There was so much stuffed into the taco, you really needed two tortillas to handle it all comfortably.

Overall, this was an enjoyable lunch of Korean tacos and dumplings. The proprietor told us there were currently no Korean restaurants in Asheville, but we would beg to differ.

El Kimchi Korean BBQ may not be a brick-and-mortar restaurant, but it is certainly an excellent place to get Korean food in Asheville.

You can find the El Kimchi facebook here and twitter here.

Antivirus Software - Protecting Your Computer's Data | Espacio Tech

When you buy a new computer you must protect your investment from malicious software programs such as viruses, worms, spyware, and trojans. These programs can cause serious damage to your computer system by erasing data or providing your sensitive data to criminals. You can help protect your personal computer by installing antivirus software to remove and prevent nasty viruses and spyware.

There are various antivirus programs available on the market and while they all do the same job, there are several things to keep in mind when choosing a program.

First you will want to consider the ease of use of the software. The average computer user is not tech savvy so you will want your antivirus software to be very user friendly. Look for features such as easy configuration as well as scanning your system on demand. The software should also automatically check for updates.

A good antivirus program will also be able to remove dangerous viruses, trojans, and worms and prevent new ones from infecting your computer. If the program cannot completely remove these viruses, it should at the minimum be able to keep the virus from spreading.

It is also important to ask if the software is a system hog. Many antivirus programs can use up a lot of your computer?s resources slowing down your system. This can cause problems if you plan on running your antivirus software in the background while you continue to work. There are many good programs available that use resources more effectively. They run unnoticed in the background while you continue to work normally.

Some antivirus programs do include spyware prevention but in order to be fully protected, you may opt for purchasing separate spyware software as well. A separate spyware program can help ensure that your computer is safe from spyware issues that a combo program may not be equipped to catch.

NHL lockout could mean happy returns for ticket ... - Financial Post

There?s not much that could convince me to become a Toronto Maple Leafs fan ? except maybe a 5% return.

A diehard Buffalo Sabres fan, I received notice from my team this month that in the event of a labour dispute in the National Hockey League I could get a refund on my purchased tickets. The players have been locked out since last week.

My beloved Sabres, who are owned by a billionaire, said if I let them hold onto my money they would pay me annual interest of 4%, which would start accruing after the games I purchased were cancelled.

Much to my chagrin, the Leafs are offering an even better rate to their season ticket holders.

?Leafs season ticket holders have an option: They can choose to be refunded monthly, should games be cancelled, and receive 1% interest, or they can leave their money on account where they will earn 5% interest,? said Pat Park, director of media relations with the team.

Across the NHL, it seems fans are being presented with this magical investment opportunity ? to get a return on their funds that any pension fund manager would be happy to accept.

The Vancouver Canucks are offering up to 3%. Likewise for the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. The Edmonton Oilers might be checking out hockey rinks in Seattle for a new location but for now their fans will be getting a 4% return on their money.

But nothing beats the cash being handed out south of the border where reports have circulated that have both the Florida Panthers and Minnesota Wild offering a meaty 10% return for fans if they let their cash ride with the team.

The money on file, with the accumulated interest, is eventually used to pay for future tickets ? assuming they play hockey again.

We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there

So why are the teams offering a rate of return I can?t possibly get on a guaranteed income certificate? For the most part it seems to be goodwill but also the hassle of returning all that money.

?We have had tremendous fan support since the start of our franchise,? said Aaron Sickman, a spokesman for the Minnesota Wild. ?They?ve been coming back to us in droves and we want to encourage our fans to keep their money with us. We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there.?

Marc Ganis, a sports consultant and president of Chicago-based SportsCorp Ltd., laughs when I tell I?m thinking of getting Wild season?s tickets and betting on a prolonged strike. ?That?s pretty impressive,? he says, about the 10% rate, adding the risk is probably minimal because he can?t remember the last time ticket holders lost their money because of a bankrupt franchise.

Mr. Ganis says the administration cost of refunding tickets is one reason why teams will pay interest to keep fans but he said the high rate might be seen as positive indicator the delay may be short. ?By doing this, it?s not a lot of money and it looks good on them,? he says. ?For this type of interest, I?d let the money roll.?

Certified financial planner Ted Rechtshaffen says it probably makes sense to leave your money with the team, if you know you are coming back to hockey when the labour dispute is over. ?The bottom line is do you want your money or do you know you are going to buying the tickets anyway, then it?s gravy,? says Mr. Rechtshaffen.

Of course, all of this is based on the premise that the underlying tickets were a worthwhile investment to begin with. ?If I was advising someone, I?d say 10% interest is great but then you turn that money into $150 hockey tickets which may or may not be the best investment,? he says. ?It?s only 10% on money that is 100% committed to buying hockey tickets.?

Maybe it?s time to just forget about buying hockey tickets. That might be the best investment I ever make.

Facebook: Is there a way of getting the current_location of users who are not my friends? Graph API or FQL

Let's imagine I have a user ID and username. I manually open her Facebook page (namely, http://www.facebook.com/username. And there it is! The "lives in" field appears saying she lives in wherever. Nevertheless, when I try to fetch her current_location using FQL (using Python):

q = 'SELECT uid, username, current_location FROM user WHERE uid=%s' % aUser

I get None in the field current_location.

On the other hand, I can easily retrieve the current_location from my friends (I mean, for those friends who have made their location public):

SELECT current_location FROM user WHERE uid IN (SELECT uid2 FROM friend WHERE uid1 = me())

I know about the permissions, but there should be a way of fetching locations. In effect, I can see the location (lives in) of user who are not even friends of my friends. How can I do it?? Thanks in advance.

Steps through which you can implement Health & Safety Training ...

by pat brownlee on September 23, 2012

Sent by Jayanta Chatterje

Business owners should ensure that every employee working within the organization is provided with a safe environment so that in case of any accidents the employees should have the complete knowledge of the preventive measures. The organization has certain legal obligations due to which they are bound to provide with the safety training to their employees. But, if any organization fails to provide the training and maintain the safety then they are subject to prosecution and it might also happen that they are charged with a heavy compensation amount and in worst condition the company can also be subject to shut down.

But, it is also essential to understand that the law is not the only obligation for which you should provide health and safety training to your employees. It is the best way through which you can improve the productivity and also provide a good and secured life to your workers. You can easily improve the revenue and earn more profits as the employees suffer from less illness and injury and this contributes to the overall improvement of the workplace. It is found that in a year millions of people get injured in their workplace and? in order to avoid such situations, ?it is essential on the part of the organization to ensure a safer environment.

There are certain steps through which you can implement the health and safety training in your organization:

  • It is essential to understand the requirement of the organization and should search for the skills and the knowledge that is necessary for the employee to work in the particular organization. It is the duty of the organization to understand the skills that the employee possesses and the skills that the company needs and work on the necessary field to reduce the gap.
  • The company should also prioritize the training and understand the requirement of the health and safety course within the organization. It is the duty of the organization to focus on the area where there is a lack of information and should provide training in that particular area so that the employees can enhance their skill as well as their knowledge.
  • The organization should also adopt the proper training method so that the employees can learn every aspect of safety and can be sure to implement them while the necessity arises. There should be proper classrooms, coaching centers, information passing mechanism and is also provided with improved interactive training so that every employee can have a better understanding of it.

Organizations that involve high risk jobs have to spend huge amounts of money on their employees, as everyday some or the other person gets injured and die due to the careless handling and lack of knowledge on how to perform their duty in the workplace. Providing safer working environment can reduce the absence of the workers and improve the productivity that will lead to the ultimate revenue generation of the business. A sense of security among the employees can lead to the improvement of the business and help them to perform and reach the desired goal.

Another important responsibility of every company is to ensure that they provide the correct personal protective equipment that fits each particular job.? Employees must be trained to wear their PPE at all times, keep it maintained, and ask for a replacement when it is damaged. pb

Mursi: Egypt-Israel peace depends on justice for Palestinians

CAIRO (Reuters) -- Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi told US media the country's peace deal with Israel depends on fulfilling its commitments to Palestinians, in comments published on Sunday.

Speaking before traveling to New York for the UN General Assembly, Mursi said Washington needed to change its approach to the Arab world, show greater respect for its values and help build a Palestinian state to reduce pent up anger in the region, the newspaper said.

"As long as peace and justice are not fulfilled for the Palestinians, then the treaty remains unfulfilled," he said in an interview with the New York Times, referring to Egypt's US-brokered peace treaty with Israel that was signed in 1979.

Mursi, who travels to New York on Monday, is not scheduled to meet Obama during his US trip. When asked whether he thought of the United States as an ally, Mursi said: "That depends on your definition of ally."

Egypt was a close ally of the United States under Hosni Mubarak, whose 30-year rule was ended by a popular uprising last year. The US government, a major aid donor to Egypt and long wary of Islamists, only opened formal contacts last year with the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled Mursi to power.

US President Barack Obama told a Spanish-language network this month that the United States did not consider Egypt's Islamist government either an ally or an enemy.

The New York Times also said Mursi indicated Egypt would not be hostile to the West but would not be as compliant as Mubarak.

"Successive American administrations essentially purchased with American taxpayer money the dislike, if not the hatred, of the peoples of the region," he said, referring - according to the newspaper - to backing dictatorial governments over popular opposition and supporting Israel over the Palestinians.

A spokesman for Mursi could not immediately be reached for comment, nor could a US embassy official.

Ahead of Mursi's trip,Obama thanked the Egyptian president for securing the US Embassy during protests against a film made in the United States that mocked Prophet Muhammad and sparked worldwide demonstrations and violence.

In a letter, Obama repeated Washington's condemnation of the film and said he looked forward to working with President Muhammad Mursi to build on the "strategic partnership", Mursi's official Facebook page said on Sunday.

"In his letter, President Obama thanked the Egyptian president for Egyptian efforts to secure the mission of the United States in Cairo," according to the site.

Obama's rival in the US presidential race, Mitt Romney, called for a tougher line with Egypt after protesters scaled the compound wall and tore down the US flag on Sept. 11.

Police clashed with demonstrators for four days after that incident and barriers were erected to stop them getting near the compound.

Marco Polo Davao: Business and Pleasure in Southern Philippines ...

THE Marco Polo Davao?s luxurious accommodations and amenities are quite simply the finest in Davao City, making it a favorite for business travel in the southern Philippines.

The luxury comes at a premium, though, but look what the higher rates get you: convenient downtown location, fine dining at the mezzanine-level Club Marco, endless lifestyle diversions at the fourth-floor Deck, and comfortably classy accommodations with views of the mountains or the Davao Gulf.

What makes it special?

The Marco Polo Davao?s location at busy Claro M. Recto Street places the hotel (and its guests) right in the middle of the action: only 20 minutes away from the airport, the hotel stands at one end of Davao City?s most prominent commercial avenue and across the street from souvenir-rich Aldevinco Shopping Center.

If you?re a businessman staying at the Marco Polo, expect Davao?s business to come to you: the hotel is a favorite watering hole for the city?s movers and shakers.

The hotel?s first-class amenities draw them in ? the Marco Polo Davao has some of the city?s finest dining establishments under its roof, including the Polo Bistro, which serves up Angus tenderloin steaks and an irresistible grilled blue marlin; the Cantonese restaurant Lotus Court; the ground-floor Eagles Bar; and the Caf? Marco, with its massive buffet and a la carte spread.

What to expect?

The Marco Polo Davao?s 245 guestrooms and suites have been designed along modern lines, with a Filipino touch. The d?cor is rich in creams and greens, reflecting Davao City?s natural hues. Large windows in every room open up to views of the Davao Gulf or the mountains around the city.

For enhanced pampering, try the Continental Club Rooms on the 17th floor and 18th floors ? Continental Club guests enjoy a range of exclusive perks, like personalized registration in a separate lounge; complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktails; and butler service.

What is there to do?

The Marco Polo Davao?s lifestyle amenities have all been aggregated on the fourth-floor Deck: an outdoor podium that houses the hotel?s 25 m swimming pool, fitness center, and the Lazuli Spa. The Sarangani Function Room and the Polo Bistro Pool Lounge can also be found on this level ? the latter is a great place to have drinks while the sun sets.

The fitness center covers two levels of exercise space, including an aerobics floor and new gym equipment. Beside the gym, the two-storey Lazuli Spa offers four treatment rooms and one couple?s room.

If you want to stay close to all this fun, book a cabana room on the fourth or fifth level; these accommodations give you the choice of a patio (for 4th-floor cabana rooms) or a balcony (for 5th-floor cabana rooms) that look out to the Deck and its activities.

What is the damage?

The superior and deluxe rooms at the Marco Polo Davao go for between US$92 to US$117, with early-bird deals and seasonal specials available. You get comfortable business-class accommodations, with the aforementioned panoramic view of the city, but WiFi is not free and requires an additional payment if you want to get the password.
